How to Make a Transparent PNG

A transparent background lets an image sit on any page colour without a box around it. Here's how to produce one in your browser.

How transparency is shown
Checkerboard = transparent pixels
Solid = opaque background

A PNG with a transparent background lets an image sit on any page colour, slide background, or printed surface without a white or black rectangle around it. It's the difference between a logo that looks like a sticker and one that looks like it belongs.

Why transparency requires PNG

JPG is great at photos and terrible at transparency — every JPG is a full rectangle. PNG supports an alpha channel, which stores per-pixel transparency. That makes PNG the standard format for anything that gets layered: website icons, presentation graphics, product shots on coloured store pages, and print layouts.

“White background” is not “no background”

A photo with a white background is still a rectangle. Put it on a dark slide and the white border becomes part of the design whether you wanted it or not.

A transparent PNG is the subject floating on nothing. The background is gone, so the image inherits whatever surface it's placed on. For product photos and logos that is usually exactly what you need.

How to make a transparent PNG in your browser

When the background is a solid or near-solid colour, you can produce a transparent PNG in about a minute:

  1. Open the GainUtility background remover and load your image.
  2. Make sure the background type is set to transparent (the default).
  3. Sample the background colour by clicking it, or keep the automatically detected corner colour.
  4. Adjust tolerance so the subject stays intact while the background disappears.
  5. Check the before/after view — the cutout preview shows a checkerboard pattern, which is how editors mark transparency.
  6. Download the result as PNG. The file has a real alpha channel, readable by every image viewer and editor.

When not to bother

Some marketplaces re-add a white backdrop themselves, so a transparent upload can look different than intended — check the listing format first. And colour removal only shines on uniform backgrounds; for hair against a busy backdrop, a dedicated editor is the honest tool for the job.
